A vignette is compulsory on almost all highway and expressway sections in Slovakia. Drivers can recognize freeways that require a vignette by the traffic signs. Sections without charges are marked with signs showing 'BEZ UHRADY'. The digital vignette has been available since 2020 and has replaced the adhesive vignette. The vignette requirement applies to cars up to 3.5t GVW and motorhomes regardless of the gross vehicle weight. A vignette is also required for trailers if the total weight of the combination of towing vehicle and trailer exceeds 3.5t GVW. If the combination does not exceed 3.5t GVW, no additional vignette is required for the trailer. Motorcycles do not require a vignette. A vignette is not sufficient for vehicles over 3.5t GVW; they require a transmission device. Try out our route planner to help you select the right product!
The highway and expressway network in Slovakia consists of 552 km of highways and 320 km of expressways. Vignettes and tolls are mandatory on highways and expressways. Vehicles under 3.5 tons (motorcycles are excluded) require a digital vignette, vehicles over 3.5 tons are subject to tolls and require a toll box (emýto). (as of 16.12.2024)
Highways subject to tolls are marked in orange on the map. (as of 16.12.2024)
The digital vignette for Slovak motorways and expressways has been available since 2020 to fund the costs of maintenance, operation, and construction of new roads in Slovakia.
Almost all sections of motorways and expressways in Slovakia require a vignette. Drivers can recognize vignette-required motorways by the traffic signs. Sections without fees are marked with signs displaying 'BEZ UHRADY'. Since 2020, the digital vignette is available and has replaced the adhesive vignette sticker.
The vignette requirement applies to vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW. It is important to note that motorcycles are exempt from the vignette requirement and do not need a vignette. Additionally, motorhomes are an exception, as they require a vignette regardless of their weight (even if over 3.5 t GVW). For combinations (car + trailer), it is important to note that if the total weight is under 3.5 t GVW, only the car needs a vignette, while if the total weight is over 3.5 t GVW, an additional vignette for the trailer must be purchased.
Motorcycles are thus exempt from the vignette requirement and do not have to pay fees for using motorways and expressways!
The vignette requirement does not apply to vehicles over 3.5t GVW (except motorhomes, which are only subject to the vignette, regardless of their weight). Instead, a distance-based toll is levied, which is calculated based on the kilometers driven, vehicle class (number of axles), and emission class (pollutant emission levels). This distance-based toll is captured using a transponder or transmission device (On-Board-Unit). Thus, the amount due can be automatically debited. Therefore, you must have such a device installed in your vehicle beforehand. The distance-based toll includes motorways, expressways, and partly roads of the first (federal road) and second class (state road/county road).

You can find the vignettes for the aforementioned vehicle classes here.:
To give you a detailed overview of the different vehicle classes, we have compiled a more detailed list in the following section.
The following vehicle types must be considered in your decision whether you need a vignette or are subject to the distance-based toll:
In Germany, neither a vignette requirement nor a distance-based toll applies to vehicles under 3.5 t GVW. However, trucks must pay a distance-based toll on motorways including rest and fuel stations as well as federal roads (including within towns). The amount for the distance-based toll is calculated based on the driven distance, vehicle class (number of axles), and Euro emission classes (pollution from CO2 emissions). In addition, when crossing the border, note that in Slovakia most motorways and expressways require a vignette. Moreover, in the countries between Germany and Slovakia, a vignette requirement may be prevalent or the distance-based toll may apply. Therefore, you should inform yourself about all countries on your route. More information about the border crossings of Slovakia can also be found here. Especially the traffic routes to popular cities (like Bratislava, Nitra, Trnava, or Martin) are subject to the vignette requirement. If you do not have a vignette registered on your vehicle, fines are imminent.
In general, there is a distinction between sticker vignettes and digital vignettes. In Slovakia, only the digital vignette is available, so we will not go into sticker vignettes any further.
Our recommendation: The digital vignette can be easily and conveniently purchased from home or on the go & via mobile phone/smartphone.
In addition, buyers save themselves the hassle of sticking and removing the vignette after the trip and queuing at the toll station.
When you buy a digital vignette, your vehicle registration number and the country of registration are stored and you automatically have the digital vignette with you. As a precaution, we would also advise you to carry the registration confirmation and the purchase receipt.
Since you do not have to consider a long waiting period for the validity of the digital vignette when purchasing it in our online shop, you can purchase it quite shortly before you start your trip. However, it is important that you do not start driving until you have received the registration confirmation from us.
No, taxes are levied on the price of the digital vignette. The tax is already included in our prices.
Yes. The digital vignette is valid throughout Slovakia.
Yes, the digital vignette is registered to the respective license plate and tied to it.
Your digital vignette is valid upon receipt of your registration confirmation, which usually occurs within a few minutes.
If you drive on motorways and expressways in Slovakia without a valid vignette as per the vignette requirement, you must expect a fine.
The fine currently ranges between 100€ and 500€.
Checks of the e-vignette are carried out by matching the vehicle license plate with a database where the validity period is logged. At fixed control points, the presence of the vignette is checked by cameras. Occasional mobile checks are also conducted.
