Fire extinguisher, warning vests, warning triangle, and first aid kit should be checked before the trip to ensure they meet legal requirements.

Since there is a vignette requirement in Slovakia and the enforcement is typically automatic, driving without a valid vignette on most Slovak roads (there are a few road sections without this requirement) constitutes a legal violation.
It is impossible to circumvent the vignette control systems. These systems continuously monitor vignette-required roads via a camera-based system. The same applies to vehicles that are not subject to the vignette requirement but are subject to a distance-based toll. The transponder (device, On-Board Unit) installed in the vehicle records the kilometers driven, and the cameras automatically detect the transponder.
Even if you leave Slovakia, it does not mean the fine will disappear. The automatic checks and EU-wide cooperation make enforcement possible even abroad. You might only find out about the fine through a penalty notice in your mailbox.
The fine amount can vary significantly. It can range from 50 to 500 Euros. Always make sure to carry your purchase receipt to prove that you have bought a valid vignette.
If you are caught without a vignette in a police check, it is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, you may often come out cheaper than through a penalty notice. This is because the police can impose the fine on-site, saving a lot of bureaucratic work. You can pay the police fine either directly in cash or transfer it within a specified period. The fine amount in this case usually ranges between 50 and 200 Euros, depending on factors like how long you've been driving without a valid vignette.
With automatic detection, more effort is required to inform you about the fine. The official procedure is likely to be more expensive than a police check. You will have to pay between 150 and 500 Euros (usually closer to 150 Euros).
The district court has up to 60 days to initiate the fine procedure. Normally, you should receive the notice within these 60 days. You have 30 days from receipt to pay the fine. If you transfer the money within 15 days, you are generally required to pay only ⅔ of the fine amount. So, it is worth paying quickly. For a fine of 150 Euros, you would only need to pay 100 Euros.
With luck, you can avoid the fine by purchasing a vignette later on the same day you drove without a valid one. If the system has not yet checked your license plate against the registered vignettes for the day, and you quickly purchase a vignette before the system checks it, you might avoid the fine. However, this option will no longer be possible after the following day, as vignettes can only be purchased for the current day and the following days.
