The vignette obligation applies to vehicles up to 3.5 t gross weight. It’s important to note that motorcycles are exempt from the vignette requirement. Motorhomes are a special case: regardless of their weight (even over 3.5 t), a vignette is required. For car-trailer combinations, if the total weight is under 3.5 t, only the car needs a vignette. If the total weight exceeds 3.5 t, an additional vignette is required for the trailer. Trucks over 3.5 t must pay distance-based tolls and are exempt from the vignette obligation.

It is not possible to bypass the vignette control systems. These systems monitor toll roads continuously with camera technology. The same applies to vehicles subject to distance-based tolls. The onboard unit (OBU) records the kilometers driven, and cameras automatically register the device.
Leaving Slovakia does not void the fine. Automatic controls and EU-wide cooperation allow cross-border enforcement. You may only find out you were fined once the notice arrives in your mailbox.

If you're stopped by police without a vignette, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it’s often cheaper than an official fine notice. That’s because police can issue a fine on the spot, avoiding additional administrative steps. You can pay it in cash or transfer it later. The fine depends on various factors, such as how long you've been driving without a vignette, and typically ranges from €50 to €200.
Automatic detection requires more administrative work, which usually makes the fine more expensive than a police stop. Expect to pay between €150 and €500 (usually around €150).
The district court has 60 days to initiate the fine procedure. You should receive the fine within that time. From then, you have 30 days to pay. If you pay within 15 days, only two-thirds of the fine is usually required. For example, instead of €150, you would only pay €100.
If you're lucky, you can avoid the fine by buying a vignette later on the same day you drove without one. If your license plate hasn’t yet been checked against the database, you might escape the fine. From the next day on, this won’t work anymore, as vignettes can only be purchased for the current or future days.
